Sunscreen: Not Just for the Beach!
When I was younger, sunscreen felt like a vacation thing—something my parents made me apply only when we were heading to the beach. Back then, it was all about not getting tanned, and honestly, I didn’t really understand why it mattered. Silly little me, right?
But as I grew up, I learned that sunscreen is not just about avoiding a tan—it’s about protecting the skin from damage. The sun gives off UV rays that aren’t visible, but they can cause skin problems like dark spots, wrinkles, sunburns, and even serious diseases. That’s why using sunscreen is not a luxury, but a necessity, no matter where you are.
🧴Right way of applying
We’ve all heard that sunscreen should be applied before stepping out in the sun, but how much should you actually use?
A simple trick is the two-finger rule—just squeeze sunscreen along the length of two fingers and spread it evenly across your face and neck. This helps ensure you’re using enough product for proper protection.
But here’s something many people forget: one application in the morning is NOT enough! Sunscreen wears off after a few hours, especially if you sweat or touch your face often. Ideally, you should reapply every 2-3 hours for the best protection.
🧴SPF: What Do Those Numbers Even Mean?
Sunscreen bottles are covered with numbers like SPF 30, SPF 50… but what do they really mean? Here’s a simple way to understand it:
• SPF (Sun Protection Factor) tells you how long sunscreen will protect you from sunburn.
• Without sunscreen, your skin might start to burn in 10 minutes. If you apply SPF 30, it theoretically multiplies that time by 30. So, 10 min × 30 = 300 minutes (5 hours) of protection.
• SPF 50 means 50 times the natural protection—so about 8 hours.
But hold on—this doesn’t mean you can apply SPF 50 in the morning and forget about it! Sunscreen wears off due to sweat, rubbing, or even just time, so you still need to reapply every few hours.
🧴My Sunscreen Struggles
Now, let’s get real—I know sunscreen is important, but lately, I’ve been struggling with it. No matter what brand I try, my skin just doesn’t seem to like it. It feels itchy, irritating, and uncomfortable. And let’s not forget that at the end of the day, sunscreen is still a chemical sitting on your skin for hours.
So, I’ve been exploring other ways to protect my skin without relying on sunscreen all the time. I’ve started using:
✔️ UV-blocking scarves
✔️ Full-sleeve jackets
✔️ Hats and sunglasses
This way, I’m still protecting my skin, but without applying a formula that makes me uncomfortable.
🧴Bottom Line: Sunscreen or No Sunscreen?
If your skin tolerates sunscreen well, use it daily—it’s one of the easiest ways to protect your skin. But if, like me, your skin reacts badly to it, don’t stress! You can still protect yourself with clothing, accessories, and shade.
At the end of the day, sun protection isn’t just about a cream—it’s about keeping your skin safe in a way that works for you.
